Item description:
Delightful blue glass bowl, with added cobalt oxides, entirely handmade with a large air bubble inside the base, unsigned work made in Murano, Venice, around the mid-20th century, attributable to Flavio Poli. The bubble inside the base is particularly beautiful, created by blowing with a small metal straw while the glass was still hot, which is extremely difficult to achieve. The base of the vase is made of very thick glass using a submerged technique, while the bowl is made of extremely thin glass.
Useful information for evaluating the object:
Online research shows that numerous vases by Flavio Poli very similar to ours, with different shapes but the same structure, with a truncated cone base and a flared or cup-shaped top, have been listed/sold at auction or offered for sale by leading art and antiques websites with minimum prices of €700-800, up to over €2,000. These types of vases can be found in both transparent versions, such as the one we are offering, and opaque versions, i.e., treated with acid.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Flavio Poli (Chioggia, 1900 – Venice, 1984) was an Italian designer, ceramist, and painter. In 1929, Flavio Poli collaborated with the company I.V.A.M. (Industrie Vetraie Artistiche Murano) - of which Libero Vitali was a partner - and designed figures to be made in solid glass. Poli was the first in Murano to tackle the theme of the female nude: in the Compostiera (Compost Bin) of 1929-30, he designed a central female bust, which served as a handle. One of these female nudes belonged to the collection of Duilio Cambellotti and was exhibited at the Monza Biennale in 1930. He also designed solid animals for the Compagnia di Venezia e Murano and created figures for the Mario e Lino Nason artistic glassworks, in collaboration with the engraver Gino Francesconi. He also collaborated with the historic glassworks Pauly & C. - Compagnia Venezia Murano. His designs were executed in glass by professional glassmakers, including Francesco Martinuzzi and Italo Nason, who created the Pudore series of sculptures in pure Novecento style, each drawn from a single mass of transparent, white, or amber glass. Flavio Poli almost never signed his works and is considered one of the most important Murano artists of the 20th century.
