The print, titled langshans met beveêrde pooten, originates from geïllustreerd hoenderboek, an illustrated poultry book published in 1888 by elsevier. This work, compiled by julius volschau and adapted for dutch readers by dr. A. C. Oudemans jzn., provides a comprehensive study of poultry breeding and care, reflecting the fascination with exotic and ornamental chicken breeds during the 19th century. The langshan breed originates from northern china and was introduced to europe in the late 19th century. These chickens were admired for their tall, upright stance, sleek black plumage with a greenish sheen, and strong yet graceful appearance. Unlike the smooth legged variety, this particular type of langshan features feathered legs, which added to its exotic appeal and made it a favorite among breeders. Langshans were valued for their dual purpose qualities, being both excellent layers and good meat birds, while their striking appearance also made them popular in poultry exhibitions. This lithograph was created using chromolithography, a highly detailed 19th century printing technique that allowed for rich colors and depth. The artwork was originally drawn by christian förster, a well known animal illustrator of the time. Chromolithographs were produced by applying multiple layers of color, each requiring a separate stone plate. This meticulous process ensured that every detail, from the delicate feathers to the subtle shading on the birds’ bodies, was beautifully rendered in the final print. Condition summary the print remains in good condition, with strong colors and intricate details still visible. Some age related toning is present, especially along the edges, along with minor foxing spots, which are common for prints of this period. The paper is well preserved, with only slight signs of wear, making this an excellent historical piece for collectors of antique poultry illustrations or those interested in rare chicken breeds. Framing tips to best display and preserve this lithograph, consider the following framing techniques - use acid free matting to protect the paper from long term deterioration. A warm cream or light gray mat will complement the dark tones of the langshans - opt for uv protective glass to shield the colors from light exposure and fading - a wooden frame in a deep mahogany, ebony, or dark walnut finish will enhance the contrast of the birds’ rich black feathers - float mounting can be used to showcase the entire sheet, preserving its historical authenticity this lithograph is an excellent example of 19th century craftsmanship and a reflection of the era’s dedication to poultry breeding and documentation. Whether displayed in a farmhouse, study, or antique print collection, it remains a stunning and historically valuable piece of agricultural art. See less
