The portrait is based on an original painting by Charles Bird King, a noted American artist commissioned to capture the likenesses of Native American leaders who visited Washington, D.C., during the early 19th century. Waa-Pa-Shaw is portrayed with striking elegance, wearing a European-style blue coat, a golden vest, and a black necktie. His attire reflects the diplomatic exchanges common during treaty negotiations, where Indigenous leaders were often gifted formal clothing. This blending of traditional identity and external influence is captured in King’s sympathetic and highly detailed portrait style. Unlike many of King’s original works that were destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian, these lithographs remain the primary visual legacy of an important generation of Native leaders. Waa-Pa-Shaw’s composed demeanor and thoughtful expression suggest wisdom and leadership in a period of profound change for Native nations across the Great Plains. The Sioux people, to whom Waa-Pa-Shaw belonged, have long held a central place in Native American history. Composed of several divisions—Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota—they were known for their strength, intricate spiritual systems, and deep connection to the land. This lithograph is both a historical document and a fine piece of 19th-century printmaking, offering collectors, historians, and institutions a rare and respectful portrayal of a key figure in Indigenous diplomacy. Condition report: Good condition overall for its age. Minor age-toning and light handling wear in the margins. Repaired at three places. Vibrant original hand-coloring preserved. Framing tips: Consider framing with a dark mahogany or black wood frame to highlight the richness of the coat. A soft beige or ivory mat adds warmth and balance, allowing the figure to stand out elegantly. See less
