Marcel Bouraine was one of France's preeminent, most prolific sculptors during the Art Deco period. Reconstituted stone "Awakening" after Marcel Bouraine champions the female form in a delicate, respectful way; it thereby stands apart, as an homage to women, from many of the more dramatic depictions of the day, which for example showed women balancing firebrands or in extreme dance poses.
