Item description:
Fabulous sculpture, wall plaque in vitrified majolica ceramic, entirely handmade, unique piece depicting "Sandrone," a mask from Roman commedia dell'arte, representing the peasant of the past, rough but cunning and shrewd, always looking for ways to make ends meet (searching online for "Sandrone maschera Commedia dell'Arte" will bring up an image of the mask, which is very similar to the one depicted in the ceramic). Sculpture created by Gastone Batignani and dating back to the first half of the 20th century. Signed on the back with two cartouches from the period, heavily oxidized and yellowed by the passing of time, with the words "Prof. Batignani" and "ceramica artistica" (artistic ceramics).
Useful information for evaluating the object:
An internet search revealed a large number of ceramic vases manufactured by Batignani, most with floral decorations, offered for sale at rather high prices ranging from a minimum of €700-800 to over €2,500. This gives an idea of the value of ceramics from this manufacturer.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Ceramic manufacturer founded by Gastone Batignani in 1907 and operating in Bagni di Ripoli, in the province of Florence. Upon the founder's death, his son Renzo took over the business, which he in turn left to Alberto in 1966. Since then, with the help of potters and decorators, Alberto has been producing glazed terracotta inspired by the Florentine cotto tradition, alongside decorative and artistic ceramics. Production continues today under the direction of Leonardo Batignani.
