Item description:
Wonderful vitrified ceramic sculpture (ceramic with added kaolin, also known as soft porcelain), depicting a little girl with an umbrella in full Art Deco style, entirely hand-decorated with an airbrush, made in Austria in the early decades of the 20th century by Herczeg Claire Weiss. Signed under the base by the Goldscheider factory, with the artist's initials in black and the catalog number. Particularly beautiful are the checkered decorations on the skirt in full Deco style, as well as the wonderful face that expresses a rare sweetness, the delightful strands of blonde hair peeking out from under the French-style hat, and the delightful black shoes typical of girls in the 1930s. Finally, the patina under the base is good. In the Goldscheider catalog published by Arnoldsche at number 7063, you can find its publication on the sculpture, where it is written that it was made around 1935 by the artist Herczeg Claire Weiss. Unfortunately, we cannot post the photo in order not to violate copyright.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Herczeg Claire Weiss boasts numerous auction results and our internet research shows that the eight highest results achieved by Herczeg Claire Weiss ceramics range from €2,000 to €5,200 (excluding 30% auction fees), all for Art Deco sculptures depicting ladies from the 1930s. This gives an idea of the importance of this artist. Sculptures of girls similar to ours in style and size range from a minimum of €700-800 to over €2,000.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Klára Herczeg, also known as Claire Weiss(-Herczeg) (1906 Budapest; 1997 Budapest), was a Hungarian sculptor. She is the founder of the Klára Herczeg Prize, awarded annually by the Young Artists Foundation. Klára Herczeg spent her childhood in Vienna and began her apprenticeship as a sculptor at the Arsenal foundry. From 1924 to 1928, she attended the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest, where she was taught by Zsigmond Kisfaludy Strobl. After completing her studies, she lived in Berlin for a year, from 1929 to 1930, and created, among other things, porcelain figures for the Rosenthal company. He then moved to Paris and studied with Charles Despiau until 1933, while continuing to design porcelain figurines for various companies. After 1933 and, with interruptions, until his death, he lived in Budapest, where he married in 1937. The marriage produced no children. His works have been exhibited since 1925. In 1937, he participated in the Universal Exhibition in Paris and in 1939 in New York. About 30 of his sculptures are located in Budapest and other Hungarian museums. His works are also exhibited abroad, for example in the House of Albrecht Dürer in Nuremberg. The porcelain and ceramic figures created between 1930 and 1940 were never exhibited or mentioned in exhibitions. Even in their last exhibition, held in 1996 on the occasion of the 90th anniversary at the Petöfi Iradolmi Museum in Budapest, none of these exceptional figures were exhibited. However, his porcelain and ceramic figurines regularly appear at art auctions and in the antiques trade. It has been proven that he designed more than 200 figures for well-known porcelain and ceramic manufacturers such as Goldscheider, Rosenthal, Herend, Hutschenreuther, Bing & Grondahl, etc.
