As early as the 14th century the Hapsburgs attempted to trace the origin of their descendants. By the 17th century it was believed that the Hapsburgs descended from the Etichoni, the dukes of Alsace, who could be traced back to Wago, the Count of Montreuil in 512. Aega, the influential palace mayor during the reign of Clovis II, came directly from Wago’s line. Believing the current theories regarding the Hapsburgs, Chatelain obviously constructed this complicated chart in the hopes of tracing the dynasty back to Aega. This print orginates from 'Atlas Historique'. Artists and Engravers: Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684-1743), his father Zacharie Chatelain (d.1723) and Zacharie Junior (1690-1754), worked as a partnership publishing the Atlas Historique.
