Literature and references:
This lithograph is after an important subject by Claude Monet, a figure for whom the study of the sea was a lifelong obsession. Titled ""Das Meer bei Belle-Isle" (The Sea at Belle-Isle) or La Côte Sauvage (the Wild Coast), this work is a raw and powerful study of the dramatic Normandy coast. The print, part of a prestigious and now rare portfolio published by the Marees-Gesellschaft, exemplifies the great quality of these reproductions. The lithograph expertly captures the energy of the original charcoal drawing, with its expressive, searching lines that convey the crashing waves and the formidable texture of the rocks.
For Monet, the sea was an ever-changing subject, and he was tireless in his efforts to capture its transient nature. He often worked en plein air, producing sketches and studies like this one to capture the spontaneity and atmospheric effects of a scene before committing to paint. This print, therefore, is not merely a picture of a coastline; it is a direct glimpse into the artist's process, revealing the foundational drawing skills that underpinned his revolutionary paintings. It is a rare and valuable testament to the dynamism and formal mastery of one of art history's most celebrated figures. This piece has an attribution mark,
