This print is a magnificent example of the artistic and technical quality of the Marees-Gesellschaft publications. It is a lithograph after a drawing by Claude Monet, showcasing the artist’s mastery of draftsmanship. The print itself is a testament to the publishing house's commitment to high fidelity; it expertly captures the nuanced lines and subtle shading of Monet’s original, preserving the texture and spontaneity of his hand. As a piece from a rare, numbered portfolio, its value is derived not only from its artistic subject but also from its own status as a collectible item of exceptional craftsmanship.
The subject—the iconic cliffs of Étretat—was of paramount importance to Monet's career. He was captivated by the dramatic rock formations of the Normandy coast and returned there repeatedly in the 1880s. Through series of paintings and drawings, he studied how the light, weather, and tides transformed the appearance of the landscape. This drawing is a direct window into his artistic process, a foundational sketch that allowed him to capture the monumental character of the rocks before translating his observations into his groundbreaking Impressionist paintings. This print offers a direct link to one of the most pivotal subjects in Monet's oeuvre. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
