literature and references:
a great example of the preparatory work that monet did for his more famous paintings.
the subject of this work is a small, rugged customs house located on the cliffs of the normandy coast, near the village of varengeville, between dieppe and pourville. These "customs officers' huts" were originally built during the napoleonic era for surveillance to prevent smuggling along the coast. By monet's time, they had become rustic, picturesque structures, often used by fishermen, and a popular motif for artists.
monet was deeply inspired by the normandy coastline, and he painted this particular cabin in a series of works in 1882 and again in 1896-1897. He was drawn to the dramatic landscapes of the cliffs and the ever-changing light and weather conditions.
the setting is the gorge of the petit-ailly, a gully that cuts through the cliffs at varengeville. The cabin is depicted perched precariously on the edge of the cliff. It no longer exists today due to cliff erosion.
the compositions is dynamic, with the diagonal line of the cliff leading the eye down toward the sea. The small cabin serves as a focal point, grounding the composition amidst the vastness of the landscape.
the artworks dedicated to the actual subject are a profound exploration of monet's core interests: the relationship between man-made structures and the wildness of nature, and the continuous study of light and its effects on a landscape. The isolated cabin can be seen as a metaphor for the artist himself, alone with his motifs, enduring the elements to capture their beauty. This piece has an attribution mark,
