Paula Clendenin is an American artist whose work is deeply rooted in the landscapes and textures of her native West Virginia. Born in Charleston and raised in the coal-mining town of Cedar Grove, Clendenin developed an early fascination with the tactile world around her. She recalls being captivated by the peeling paint and weathered clapboard of her neighbors’ homes—textures that would later inspire her lifelong exploration of surface, patina, and memory.
Her art reflects both the physical and psychological presence of the Appalachian landscape, informed by the people and places that shaped her. In the mid-1980s, she began a series of collographs that foreshadowed her ongoing engagement with landscape, establishing her reputation for richly layered works that evoke time, history, and place.
