A finely detailed 19th-century hunting scene by Charles-Louis Kratke (French, 1848–1921), dated 1871. The work captures the intensity of the hunt, with figures and hounds surrounding their quarry in a forest setting. The dramatic composition and earthy palette reflect the Romantic traditions of 19th-century French painting, blending realism with atmospheric storytelling.
Charles-Louis Kratke was a painter, engraver, and sculptor who studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Charles Albert Waltner. He exhibited at the Paris Salon beginning in 1868 and went on to earn medals at international exhibitions, including a bronze at the Universal Exhibition of 1889 and a silver medal in 1900 for works inspired by John Constable. His career spanned painting, sculpture, and engraving, earning him a place among notable French interpretive engravers of the late 19th century.

This mid-19th-century oil on canvas by Kratky (as indicated by the brass nameplate) presents beautifully, with vibrant coloration, clear surface definition, and stable craquelure throughout. The painting has been professionally conserved, showing several historic patches to the reverse that have been carefully executed and remain structurally stable. These restorations do not detract from the visual presentation. The painting surface has likely been cleaned and re-varnished in the past, offering a warm, even sheen and strong contrast between the rich costumes and wooded background. The ornate giltwood frame appears to be of the same period, with deep foliate carving and original gilding. It shows expected age wear, small corner losses, and minor gesso separation, all consistent with a 19th-century frame of this style and age. Ready to hang and display. less
