Hondius, 1633, Hand-Colored, Decorative and Historic This rare and beautifully executed antique map titled 'Le Maine' was published in 1633 by Henricus Hondius in Amsterdam, and is a fine example of early 17th-century Dutch cartography. It is an engraved map with original hand coloring, illustrating the historic French province of Maine, which during the Ancien Régime lay between Normandy and Anjou. Measuring 370 by 500 mm, the map is highly detailed, featuring an intricate network of rivers, towns, forests, and administrative boundaries. Major towns such as Le Mans and Laval are clearly marked, and neighboring regions including Anjou, Touraine, and parts of Normandy are partially visible. The ornamental elements are particularly striking, with an elaborate title cartouche in the upper right, framed by lavish scrollwork and crowned cherubs, as well as a royal crest in the lower left incorporating the French fleur-de-lis, symbolizing the province’s allegiance to the French crown. Produced by Henricus Hondius, a leading figure in Dutch cartography and successor to Jodocus Hondius and Gerard Mercator, this map belongs to the famous 'Atlas Novus'. Its combination of aesthetic beauty and historical importance makes it a valuable piece for collectors of antique maps, French history, and Dutch cartographic artistry. This map predates the French Revolution and reflects the old provincial boundaries before the reorganization into départements. It offers insight into the administrative and territorial understanding of 17th-century France and would appeal especially to those with connections to the region or an interest in the evolution of French geography. Condition Report: Good condition overall. Original hand coloring well preserved. Lower margin split at the centerfold (not affecting the image), and there is a faint water stain in the lower right corner. Paper remains stable with wide margins and strong plate impression. Framing Tips: Frame this piece in a dark-stained or gilded wooden frame with an acid-free, off-white mat to highlight the map’s warm patina and colorful detailing. Conservation glass is advised to prevent UV fading and moisture exposure, especially given the minor water stain. The map would display well either with visible margins or floated for full edge visibility.
