This is an hand colored steel engraving of a French Planisphere of the world showing it as it was conceived in the mid 19th C., It is unframed as has a few tears on the edges. It is marked in the upper left hand corner as ""Atlas Illustre" and "No 95" in the upper right hand corner. It is from the Atlas Universal Illustre by Victor Levasseur. In the lower left hand corner the words. "Imp ie de Lemercier, Paris" and "a Paris, chez l Editeur, Rue de la Parcheminerie. 15. In the boxes on the lower right and left of the Planisphere are descriptions of the continents and oceans at the time the map was made.
The map is surrounded by hand colored depictions of the seasons with astrological figures and a woman that appears to be Mother Nature on the top with Adam and Eve depicted next to her. At the bottom of the map there is a depiction of Christ holding a wooden cross.

The writing on the map is clear and legible. The continents are depicted as they were perceived at the time of printing. The piece has a small tear on the right side and a small V shaped piece missing on the top. None of this damage affects or compromises the image. less
