a preparatory study for the painting "au jardin" (in the garden, 1870), exhibited at the metropolitan museum of art in new york from september 24, 2023 to january 7, 2024, now back to the original location, the shelburne museum in shelburne, vermont.
it's interesting to notice that in our version the man on the right (likely the painter de nittis) is missing, and it should precede the final painting.
one of edouard manet's very first plein-air paintings, this intimate scene demonstrates manet's prowess at rendering effects of light, shade, and color. Sunlight dapples the path and garden wall beyond and illuminates the infant's blanket and the delicate sleeves and bodice of the woman's dress, drawing us into this tender moment en famille in a parisian garden. The sitters may be edma and tiburce morisot, siblings of the painter berthe morisot, and edma's newborn daughter. It has also been suggested that the painting depicts the family of italian artist giuseppe de nittis, manet's friend and the first owner of the work. This piece has an attribution mark,
