A magnificent pair of large trays in repoussé and patinated copper dating from the late 19th century. Each of these trays tells a glorious page of history, with striking scenes depicting the coronation of Charlemagne and his death. In the upper part, we discover a medallion depicting Charlemagne wearing a majestic crown, surrounded by the Latin inscription "Carlus Magnus." This imperial evocation is accompanied by chained figures, surrounded by chivalric emblems such as helmets, swords, chainmail, and shields, symbols of strength and honor. The bottom of the tray reveals another iconographic richness: the goddess of justice, Themis, enthroned in a medallion surrounded by putti carrying trumpets. This representation evokes the fairness and legitimacy of Charlemagne's reign. In the center, each tray depicts figures dressed in medieval clothing, in solemn postures, accentuating the narrative and historical character of these unique works. These trays combine the finesse of repoussé and the elegance of their decoration. They are a choice piece for lovers of decorative art, medieval history, or discerning collectors seeking rare and meaningful objects. In very good original condition and boasting a beautiful patina, these trays are not only decorative: they embody a sculpted fragment of the Carolingian heritage.
Charlemagne, probably born in 748, was King of the Franks from 768, then Emperor of the West from 800. The son of Pepin the Short, he expanded his empire through numerous conquests in Europe, notably against the Saxons and Lombards. He was crowned Emperor in Rome by Pope Leo III, marking the rebirth of the Roman Empire in the West. A promoter of education and the arts, he initiated the Carolingian Renaissance. He died in 814 in Aachen, leaving a major political and cultural legacy.
