Item description:
wonderful wall sculpture, bas-relief plaque in majolica, entirely modeled and handmade, therefore a unique piece, depicting a woman with a fan in 18th-century dress, enriched by accentuated vitrification due to the use of high-quality lead glazes, and created by the famous sicilian artist giacomo alessi from caltagirone. Signed on the back with his initials, "g" and "a." entirely hand-decorated sculpture, beautiful patina covering the entire sculpture, allowing us to date it to around 1980-1990, making it one of the artist's earliest works.
useful information for evaluating the object:
giacomo alessi founded his own ceramics factory in caltagirone in 1978, which is now run by his son. In addition to producing ceramics inspired by local tradition, he also creates a series of important works of art, all unique pieces modeled by hand like our sculpture, which he exhibits at numerous fairs, events, competitions, and art exhibitions, including at an international level, with great success. To give an idea of his importance, it should be noted that he is one of the few sicilian potters listed in the book of living human treasures established by the region of sicily and approved by unesco, because he is one of the few heirs to the ancient art of sicilian pottery from caltagirone. His workshop is still active and in our internet research, we found four sculptures offered in his studio at rather high prices, with requests of over €8,000. Finally, we found two sculptures, larger than ours but similar in glazing, color palette, and vitrification, one shown in an article dedicated to an exhibition in which the artist participated and the other offered at €1,500.
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
born in caltagirone, in the province of catania, in 1955, giacomo alessi has been active in his hometown since 1978 with his own ceramic workshop, where he creates pieces inspired by the great local tradition alongside handcrafted items of great artistic significance. He is a signatory of the "manifesto for the applied arts of the new century." considered one of the most important sicilian artists of the 20th century, giacomo alessi is also an expert on sicilian traditions and has written a book on caltagirone ceramics from the 16th to the 19th century entitled "fiasche, lumiere, canteri e cannate." in the last photo, we have included additional information about the artist for those who wish to learn more.
