Item description:
a stunning plaque, a richly glazed majolica ceramic medallion depicting the madonna and child with crowns, entirely decorated with an airbrush, created by sculptor and ceramist angelo biancini around 1950-1960. On the back is an old label from 1973, oxidized by the years, which states who made the object, "angelo biancini," and where, "faenza." i suppose it was affixed by the art gallery that offered the object for sale. Note the beauty of the outer edge of the plaque, entirely worked in bas-relief with a decoration of spearheads interspersed with small hemispheres. Finally, it is very beautiful that the bas-relief of the madonna and child is located within a delightful frame that recedes deeply into the central part, where the bas-relief is located, giving the plaque great depth.
useful information for evaluating the item:
our internet research shows that the four highest auction results found on art price, in the "sculptures-volume" category by angelo biancini, range from €3,400 to €9,500, excluding auction fees of 25-30%. For bas-relief plaques, prices can reach as high as €2,500-€3,000. Bear in mind that these are all auction bases, prices that could easily rise during the auction, and auction fees of 25-30% must also be added to the price achieved. Furthermore, we are talking about rather dated auctions (2002-2010), prices that, therefore, compared to today, considering inflation, would certainly be much higher.
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
born in 1911, sculptor and modeler angelo biancini began working at a very young age for paolo zoli's ceramic manufacturer "la faience" in the late 1920s. From 1936 to 1940, he was called upon to collaborate with guido andlovitz in the artistic direction of "s.c.i." (società ceramica italiana di laveno). Angelo biancini died in castel bolognese in 1988. Many of his ceramics are preserved in the museum of faenza, and a personal room is dedicated to him in the vatican museums' collection of modern religious art. Angelo biancini won many awards during his long artistic career, such as the gold medal for decorative plastic arts at the universal exposition in paris in 1937 and the faenza prize in 1957 for his majolica work entitled "gesù" (jesus).
