Item description:
Fabulous basket lamp with a slightly flattened shape and an ellipsoidal mouth, made of acid-treated pink opaline blown glass with a rim crowning the entire mouth of the lamp and two large medallions decorated in bas-relief on the two main sides of the lamp, applied entirely by hand using hot black glass paste. The lamp is in perfect working order and dates back to around 1950, at the height of 20th-century Modern Design. The object is unsigned, but was made by Tommaso Barbi and can be attributed with certainty to this artist, as it has been published in numerous sales advertisements and is featured in the catalog of Tommaso Barbi's works.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Our internet research shows that numerous items by Tommaso Barbi are offered on the Internet at very high prices, with peaks of over €12,000 for the largest and most important pieces. Finally, we found our lamp, identical in pink glass, sold on the Internet for €900, and another identical lamp, but in white glass instead of pink, offered on the Internet for €1,020.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Tommaso Barbi was a renowned Italian designer and artist, famous above all for his contribution to lighting, furniture, and interior design. Born in 1944 in Florence, he studied art and design in his hometown, as well as in Rome and Milan. The main feature of Barbi's work lies in his use of high-quality materials such as brass, bronze, and crystal, together with his attention to detail and craftsmanship. He is particularly well known for creating elegant and refined lighting fixtures, often characterized by organic and geometric shapes. Throughout his career, Barbi has had the opportunity to collaborate with prestigious clients, including luxury brands and private customers in Europe, the United States, and Asia. He has also worked closely with leading architects and interior designers of his time, including Renzo Mongiardino and Peter Marino. In addition to being a successful designer, Barbi also practiced painting and sculpture, exhibiting his works in galleries and museums throughout Italy and Europe. Sadly, he passed away in 2015, but his legacy as one of the most influential designers of the 20th century lives on today.
