ARTIST: Tomita Keisen (1879-1936) was a Japanese painter of the nihonga style. His artistic training began with Kinugasa Morimasa a follower of the Kanō school. In 1896 Keisen moved to Kyoto to continue his training with Tsuji Kakō, who was a follower of the Shijō school. During this time Keisen began a process of self-searching that led him to Zen meditation practice, the study of Christianity and ancient Chinese philosophy, as well as an interest in the art of Sengai, a Zen monk. With several national and international exhibits, Keisen enjoyed considerable success during his lifetime and he travelled widely, within Japan as well as to China and Europe. Today Keisen’s work can be found in museum collections around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Seattle Art Museum.
