Jerome Zerbe, the court photographer of New York’s café society, was accustomed to portraying the ephemeral nightclub scene. In this book, he realized a lifelong dream of photographing something more lasting, the petit châteaux and moderately scaled royal getaways of previous centuries. Included are the Chinese Pavilion at Drottingholm Palace, several pavilions at Tsarskoe Selo, the Amelienburg in Bavaria (whose dining room Chips Channon recreated), Bagetelle at Abbeville, King George IV’s Brighton Pavilion, and many others.
“Our definition of a pavilion is a small ornamental house where one can sleep (though not live) all the year round, where one can watch the hunt or go fishing or enjoy the ‘vie du château’ in miniature.”
--Cyril Connolly
