From a Los Angeles estate with ties to The Doors, this early 1960s Knoll Barcelona chair and matching ottoman carry both mid-century modern pedigree and rock-and-roll lore.
The frame is heavy chrome-plated steel (from before Knoll transitioned to stainless in the 1970s), with riveted belting leather straps and the distinctive L-shaped crossbar brackets unique to Knoll’s construction.
Note on markings: Early Knoll Barcelona chairs from this era often did not carry the later etched “KnollStudio / Mies van der Rohe” signature or label that became standard in the 1970s. The absence of such a stamp is consistent with early production. Taken together — frame material, joinery, strap construction, and precise dimensions — all details align with authentic Knoll manufacture of the period.
The cushions are upholstered in buttery-soft, supple leather of exceptional quality. They present as a custom set crafted for a discerning client, with vibrant red coloring and exquisite workmanship. While not the original Knoll factory cushions, they are period-appropriate, finely tailored, and in near-flawless condition — arguably superior to many surviving originals.
According to the prior owner, this chair with the ottoman was acquired from a former sound technician for The Doors. Family lore holds that when Jim Morrison’s affairs were being settled, the technician — still owed money — was permitted to select items as partial compensation. Among those chosen was this Barcelona chair, believed to have come from one of Morrison’s Los Angeles residences, possibly in Laurel Canyon, a hub of the 1960s–70s music scene. Given that Morrison’s estate remained in probate until the mid-1970s and entangled into the 1980s, it is entirely plausible that high-value personal pieces like this chair could have circulated in this way. While the story cannot be independently verified, it adds a compelling layer of Los Angeles history and mythology to an already iconic design.
