Handsome hand carved white marble torso with a chiseled texture on a wood base by listed and well known artist … Read more Handsome hand carved white marble torso with a chiseled texture on a wood base by listed and well known artist ‘Si’ Gordon (American 1908-1952). The artist Gordon only lived 44 years, however he created this sculpture in 1956. It stands 11” high by 5” wide and 3.75" deep and would look great wherever placed. (See photo of it on a side table with other things in the additional photos section).

Gordon was employed in the sculpture division of the Federal Art Project (1935-43), a Works Project Administration (WPA) program that employed artists on a monthly stipend. The Federal Art Project established more than 100 community art centers throughout the country, researched and documented American design, commissioned murals and sculptures for public buildings, and sustained some 10,000 artists and craft workers during the Great Depression.

There were no restrictions on style or subject matter set by the program. Nevertheless, social realism was the favored style of many artists like Gordon as they sought to capture the enduring strength in the face of difficulties exhibited by many Americans during the Great Depression.

Gordon’s Rural Couple with Child gives us a family that stand barefoot, firmly planted on the land, and standing strong together, a bulwark against adversity. Gordon’s art is in many museums including The Smithsonian Museum of Art and many public and private art collections. The marble torso has a stainless steel pin in its bottom that fits easily into the wood base where the artists signature and date '56 appear. See less
