This original pencil sketch, titled "Sleeping Cat," is a work by the renowned American artist William Zorach (1887-1966). Dated March 14, 1959, and inscribed "To Susan with Love" denotes that it was a personal gift.
Zorach was known primarily as a sculptor, although he also created numerous drawings and watercolors. His drew inspiration from nature and his home, including his family and pets.
Cats were a recurring and beloved subject for the artist, appearing in both his sculptures and drawings. His depictions, like this "Sleeping Cat," often capture the animal's natural repose and charm, reflecting a personal connection and appreciation for their form.
Zorach revisited the "Sleeping Cat" theme even in sculptures like the "Sleeping Coon Cat" at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, as well as a bronze version from around 1950. This drawing offers a glimpse into his sketching process and his keen observation of feline anatomy and behavior. It further exemplifies Zorach's mastery of pencil as a medium, demonstrating his ability to convey form and texture through line work and shading. Purrrrrrr.
