Rare and highly desired art book by artist (American, 1943-2010) Purvis Young. Back in the 1970’s when outsider artist Purvis Young began painting in Miami, Florida he would go into the local library and steal books and then paint on individual pieces of repurposed sheets of paper and then glue each page into the book.
This book has 57 double spread paintings in it consisting of horses and warriors. The book isn’t signed, but that isn’t unusual since the size of the pages aren’t large enough, at least that’s our opinion. But the book and the paintings are guaranteed to be by Young all 57 double page spreads. Plus, it would look outstanding if placed inside a Lucite box as shown in the additional photos section, and then placed on the living room cocktail table for example.
What is interesting to know, is as Young became so we’ll know for his art, the libraries in Miami ended up giving books to Young for free once they knew he would to paint in them for creating art. That’s why in part these books are rare, because for one, Young didn’t do very many. And, just imagine this uneducated and self-taught individual to come up with the idea of creating such an art object.
Young’s individual paintings on paper of this size sell for as much as $800.00 or more framed. This book has 57 double page spread paintings inside. We suggest you have a Lucite box made with a simple white piece of wood as a base. Then place the book inside with its pages butterflied open to showcase this book on a coffee table for great conversation piece. Please see a picture in the additional photos section of a Lucite box showcasing a different kind of art book which will give you an idea of how great this idea can be.
This book was acquired directly from the artist in 1991 at his studio in Wynwood/Overtown area of Miami, Florida. And going full circle, Young’s artwork is in more than 22 museums across the country. Plus, Young’s artwork is highly collected and in many important collections both public and private. From being nothing on the streets of Miami, he became a listed artist and an important figure in the world of folk art.
