A rare 1839 portrait by Count Alfred d’Orsay (1801–1852), the celebrated French artist, dandy, and society figure of Regency London. D’Orsay was famed for his elegant profile drawings of cultural and political luminaries, and his works remain highly collectible today. This portrait depicts Richard Monckton Milnes (1809–1885)—English poet, art patron, and later 1st Baron Houghton—shown in sharp profile and framed in period rosewood with gilt liner.
Presented in a period rosewood veneer frame with a water-gilded inner liner (gilt slip). It has a hanging ring imbedded in the frame. The dramatic, chocolate-to-reddish figuring of the rosewood and the fine line work of the engraving make a refined pairing for a library, office, or portrait wall.
