Ward'. The treatment of trees and overall composition strongly resembles the celebrated artist James Ward RA (1769–1859) in his 1789 oil painting 'In the Forest', and also in various tree studies in pencil by the artist. Whilst its composition differs, 'In the Forest' also features a small red cloaked figure.James Ward was an immensely talented artist who excelled at a wide range of subjects, but is best known for his animal paintings.In watercolour with scratching out and gum arabic to intensify the colour.Provenance: The Collection of the etcher Percy James Westwood (1878-1958) and by descent.All artworks come with a Certificate of Authenticity and—if it is a collection artwork—its accompanying collection text or artist biography.
