The view captures the monumental Gothic tower from a quiet street lined with traditional brick houses, a wooden handcart resting by the right-hand doorway, and the cobbled road bathed in soft shadow. The tower’s distinctive open belfry arches and massive buttresses are rendered with precise linear detail and a sensitive play of light and shade. Signed in pencil lower right “H. van Dokkum” and inscribed lower left, this work exemplifies Van Dokkum’s refined etching technique and his interest in Dutch townscapes. Born in Rotterdam, Hans van Dokkum studied at the Rijksnormaalschool voor Teekenonderwijzers in Amsterdam (1926–1930) and became known as a painter, graphic artist, engraver, and etcher. He was an active member of several artists’ associations, including Arti et Amicitiae and Kunstliefde, and taught drawing in Utrecht and Amsterdam for many years. His graphic work often focused on architectural and urban subjects, combining documentary clarity with atmospheric depth. Dating likely from the mid-20th century, this etching reflects both the artist’s technical mastery and his deep appreciation of historic Dutch architecture. The Oldehove, a key landmark of Leeuwarden, began construction in 1529 but was never completed; it has leaned since its earliest stages, making it a symbol of resilience and character for the city. Condition report: Very good impression with clear platemark. Light, even age toning to the sheet. Minor handling marks in the wide margins. Two small hinge remnants to the top edge, well away from the image. No tears, creases, or repairs. Paper remains strong. Framing tips: This print will suit a simple dark wood or black frame to complement the architectural subject. Use a warm off-white or light cream mount to harmonize with the paper tone and keep the generous margins visible to show both the platemark and the pencil signature. UV-protective glazing recommended. Technique: Etching Maker: Hans van Dokkum, Rotterdam 1908 – Utrecht 1995, Netherlands See less
