This striking 19th-century lithograph titled Paris en Ballon (Paris from a Balloon) offers a remarkable aerial perspective of the French capital, viewed as if from a hot air balloon high above the city. Rendered with exceptional precision and sweeping detail, this panoramic view presents Paris as it appeared around the mid-19th century, capturing the urban fabric before the radical transformation led by Baron Haussmann. The scene is centered on the Île de la Cité, with the Cathedral of Notre-Dame prominently featured in the foreground. from there, the viewer’s eye follows the River Seine as it winds through the historic heart of Paris toward the distant horizon. Bridges, boulevards, and monumental landmarks—including the Louvre, Tuileries Gardens, and Place de la Concorde—are laid out in exacting perspective, giving a dynamic sense of both topography and architectural grandeur. This lithograph is part of the series Excursions Aériennes, a product of the period's fascination with flight and scientific progress. The balloon shown drifting in the sky is both a symbol of modernity and a poetic device, positioning the viewer as a quiet observer from above.
The drawing was executed by A. (Albert) and lithographed in Paris by Lemercier, one of the most respected printing houses of the time. The print was published in Paris by G. Lemoine (14 Rue du Louvre) and in London by Gambart, Junin & Co., 25 Berners Street. This print blends technical cartography with artistic vision and was likely designed for an educated and urban audience captivated by the growing city and the marvels of modern flight. It is an exceptional example of cityscape lithography that bridges science, tourism, and fine art.
