Drawn and signed by French artist Léon Noël, the print is dated 1844 and is a strong example of religious academic art from mid-19th-century France. Moses is portrayed standing barefoot in a rocky landscape, wearing richly draped robes, with his right hand resting on the stone tablets inscribed in Hebrew. Rays of light radiate from his head, a traditional depiction based on the Latin Vulgate translation of Exodus 34:29, symbolizing divine revelation. His left hand gestures outward as if presenting the commandments to the viewer, conveying both spiritual authority and moral guidance. Léon Noël (1807–1884) was a French painter and lithographer known for his historical and religious subjects. A student of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and a pupil of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Noël mastered the neoclassical style and applied it with precision in his lithographic works. This print reflects his academic training and his skill in capturing human expression, gesture, and drapery. The lithograph technique used here allowed for subtle shading and highly detailed linework, bringing out the texture of Moses’ garments, the landscape, and the inscriptions on the tablets. Lithography was the favored technique for fine art reproduction during the 1800s, valued for its ability to reproduce tonal depth and intricate detail. This piece would appeal to collectors of religious art, Judaica, 19th-century prints, or historical imagery. It is also an excellent decorative piece for libraries, offices, study rooms, or institutions interested in religious or ethical history. Condition report: The print is in very good condition. The image area is clean, with strong contrasts and clear detail. There is some light foxing visible in the wide surrounding margin. The sheet has been mounted on a cream backing for presentation. There are no tears or significant flaws. Framing tips: A dark wood or black frame will lend weight and formality to the subject. For a more traditional look, a gold or bronze inner border can add a subtle richness. Use a light cream or parchment-colored mat to complement the artwork’s tone and keep focus on the figure. UV-protective glass is recommended to prevent fading and preserve the print’s sharp detail. This piece would display beautifully in both classic and scholarly interiors. See less
