Created by François Claudius Compte-Calix, it was published in Paris in 1853 by Chez Aubert et C-ie as part of the acclaimed Le Keepsake de Costumes series, a luxurious publication presenting traditional costumes from across Europe, North Africa, and beyond. François Claudius Compte-Calix (1813-1880) was a distinguished French painter and lithographer celebrated for his romantic and historical scenes, as well as his detailed ethnographic costume studies. His works combine artistic refinement with documentary accuracy, preserving cultural attire with authenticity and elegance. This hand-colored lithograph, part of the Musée Cosmopolite collection, portrays the young Jewish girl standing gracefully beside a large white amphora. She wears a flowing, richly patterned pink dress adorned with gold floral motifs, a golden bodice, and a matching pink headscarf tied with gold details. Her hand rests lightly on the amphora, while her other arm rests confidently on her hip, creating a sense of poise and dignified beauty. The lithographic detail and delicate hand coloring bring out the textures of fabric, embroidery, and jewelry, giving this portrait a lifelike and decorative presence. Lithography, the technique used here, involved drawing onto a limestone plate, which was then inked and pressed onto paper, producing detailed and crisp lines. Each print was subsequently hand-colored with water-based pigments to enhance its depth and vibrancy. Condition summary: overall good condition with scattered foxing visible throughout the sheet and light toning typical for mid-19th century prints. A minor water stain is visible along the lower right margin, not affecting the central image. Framing tips: this print will be beautifully presented in a gold, dark wood, or walnut frame to complement the rich pink and gold hues of the costume. A cream or warm beige mat will enhance the delicacy of the coloring and provide a soft contrast to the aged paper. Museum-quality UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the colors and prevent further toning. This lithograph is ideal for collectors of Jewish history, Algerian ethnographic art, orientalism, and 19th-century costume prints. It is also a refined decorative choice for studies, libraries, cultural institutions, or elegant living spaces, offering timeless beauty and an evocative glimpse into the Jewish community of Algiers during the mid-1800s.
