Waxwing Falls
Ink and watercolor on Chinese origin paper with silk mounting, wood, silk tie
58 x 16.5 inches
This elegant hanging scroll depicts a songbird perched on a blossoming branch before a rushing waterfall. Rendered in ink and watercolor, the composition harmonizes vivid red leaves with the soft tonal washes of water and rock, achieving both delicacy and strength. The bird, painted with fine precision, appears mid-song—an emblem of vitality within the serenity of nature.
Mounted on patterned silk with wooden tie ends, the scroll reflects traditional Chinese presentation methods, lending the work both refinement and cultural authenticity.
Xiuge Wu, born in Hunan Province in 1937, began her career as a professor of Material Science at Donghua University, Shanghai, before devoting herself to painting full-time after 1997. Educated in Chinese watercolor, flower-and-bird, and landscape painting, Wu has exhibited internationally, including at ArtExpo New York and the Boston International Fine Art Show. Her works are held in collections in China, Europe, and the United States.
“Waxwing Falls” exemplifies Wu’s ability to integrate the lyrical essence of traditional Chinese painting with a vibrant, modern sensibility.
