Red Blossoms Scroll - Ink and watercolor on Chinese origin paper with silk mounting, wood silk tie - 58 x 16.5 inches
This traditional hanging scroll features a vivid portrayal of red blossoms rendered in ink and watercolor. Painted in the classical Chinese style, the work balances expressive brushstrokes with delicate detail, capturing both the resilience of the tree trunk and the fleeting beauty of its blossoms. The scroll is mounted on silk with a wooden tie, reflecting the refined presentation customary in Chinese literati art.
Born in Hunan Province in 1937, Xiuge Wu pursued a distinguished career in science as a professor of Material Science and Engineering at Donghua University, Shanghai, before devoting herself to painting full-time after retirement in 1997. Trained in Chinese watercolor, landscape, and flower-and-bird painting, Wu draws inspiration from traditional motifs and techniques, particularly floral subjects. Her works have been exhibited internationally, including at ArtExpo New York and the Boston International Fine Art Show, and are held in collections in China, Europe, and the United States.
Wu is especially celebrated for her depictions of peonies, though her broader oeuvre demonstrates a mastery of natural forms with elegance and vitality. This scroll exemplifies her ability to transform traditional techniques into luminous, contemporary expressions of cultural heritage.
