At its center stands the so-called *columna milliaria*, a column believed to reference or metaphorically embody the roman tabula peutingeriana – the famous ancient roman map depicting the cursus publicus, or road network, of the empire. The design is credited to johann volckamer, a prominent german nuremberg-based publisher and horticulturist of the 18th century, best known for his richly illustrated botanical work 'nürnbergische hesperides'. The structure shown here may have been inspired by a feature in his garden or estate, as indicated by the latin inscription "designavit ioan volckamer et in viridario suo\." (designed by johann volckamer and in his garden\.). The engraving is executed by w. Pfan, an artist known for his precise and linear style, effectively capturing architectural grandeur and symbolic imagery. The central pillar appears to be inscribed or illustrated, likely referencing a geographic or cosmographic concept—possibly echoing the medieval reinterpretations of ancient geography. A statue holding a scepter or orb, possibly a personification of the sun or a roman deity, surmounts the structure. The use of symmetrical columns and latin inscriptions on the bases reinforces the classical theme and its symbolic intention as a monument to learning, navigation, or global awareness. This print is a compelling piece for collectors of architectural fantasies, garden designs, or allegorical geography. Condition report: fair condition. General age-related toning. Some creasing, especially near the vertical and lower margins. Minor edge wear and a small tear at the right margin. Please refer closely to the image for a full assessment. Framing tips: a dark wood or black frame with a cream or off-white mat would emphasize the engraving’s architectural detail and classical tone. An antique or fluted molding would complement its neoclassical feel. Technique: engraving maker: w. Pfan, germany, after johann volckamer date: c.1780 See less
