Day and Night Original Oil Style of Willem de Kooning and Richard Diebenkorn
Substantial abstract expressionist oil painting of intertwining hues of oranges, yellows and greys by American artist Donald Roberts (American, 1923-2015). Tones of greys cover the top right corner, slowly blending into yellow, finally mixing into hues of oranges in the bottom left corner. Geometric and biomorphic shapes are seen in the middle of the canvas. Roberts, an east coast artist, is heavily influenced by his peers and contemporaries Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning and Richard Diebenkorn.
Signed "Roberts" lower right.
Unframed.

This noted lithographer, painter, sculptor and teacher was born in 1923 at Wolfeboro, NH, first studied at Boston's Vesper George School of Art. After serving in Europe during WW2, he graduated (1948) from Vesper George where he remained to teach through 1952. In 1952, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design and then went on to complete his Masters of Fine Arts (1953) at Ohio State.
In 1953, Roberts was appointed Professor of Art at Ohio University where he served until 1991. While there, he played a central role in curating and assembling the contemporary print collection of the Ohio College of Fine Arts, subsequently renamed the Kennedy Museum. From 2010, Roberts served on the Kennedy Museum of Art's Advisory Board.
Roberts was a prolific artist and, for over 50 years, spent his summer months with his wife, the artist June Roberts, at Rabbit Lodge, their hillside studio on Vinalhaven Island, Maine. Over the course of a long and distinguished career, he exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. Roberts' work may be found in private and public collections nationwide, including the permanent collections of the Butler Institute of American Art (Youngstown) and the Columbus Museum of Art. We are pleased to offer a substantial, late work by this notable American Modernist.
