Bold surrealist portrait by Robert William Hinds (American, b. 1926). This piece has a dream-like quality, with the subject standing in a stark forest landscape with red trees. Three box kites are floating behind him, with outlines of babies - possibly a reference to other selves, past lives, or childhood innocence. An argyle pattern is present throughout the piece, linking the subject to the kites.

Robert William Hinds (American, b. 1924) is an artist, illustrator, sculptor, and educator originally from Ohio. Hinds worked as a graphic designer for about 15 years in New York but left to pursue sculpting and painting full-time. He studied casting techniques in Bologna, Italy before returning to the United Stated and settling in Santa Fe. Hinds was a United Nations Artist, living in the Caribbean where he taught and directed art programs. His world travels are frequently reflected in the themes of his art. See less
