Milton Avery ( 1885 - 1965 ) is a non traditional American Modern painter. While clearly representational, Avery's work is seminal to American Abstract painting as it focuses on color relations and is not concerned with creating the illusion of depth. Often thought of as The American " Matisse " because of his colorful, imaginative, and poetic bold creative use of drawing and color, that set him apart from the other painters of his era. Art works by Avery are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
This beautiful volume traces the course of Avery's artistic career in more than 150 offset lithograph print reproductions. His greatest and most provocative works are included, as well as many lesser known and equally as significant. Accompanying the illustrations is an authoritative and illuminating text providing essential facts and insightful criticism of Avery's development, thought and achievement.
