With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this exceptional and rare antique game table. This example, also referred to as a card table, was made by a master cabinet-maker working in England during the third quarter of the late 18th century. This table is quite similar to an American game table with only a few identifying features such as English Yew secondary wood selected for the support boards that join to the rear legs visible on the backside. The inner rear leg serves as a "gate-leg" with the ability to pivot open at least ninety degrees as to allow the top board to open fully and be supported from beneath. Two inset brass hinges are channeled into the edges of both boards so that the table top can be easily opened up. The table is quite sturdy and stands on five expertly tapered legs.
The table has an overall form referred to as "demi-lune" translated from the original Greek to mean "half-moon". Game tables are commonly placed in bedrooms, hallways, and parlors or living rooms often tucked neatly against a wall with the top open and supported against the wall. While these tables were designed to be opened and sat at, today they mostly serve as console tables in homes full of historical antiques. The apron features satinwood inlay designed to create three octagonal panels which span the length of the table. An additional band of inlay spans across the table as to provide with a bit of contrast against the darker mahogany. The octagonal elements are inspired from ancient Scottish designs representing the four seasons of the year. These designs, first taken from runestones arranged on properties, were adapted into decorative elements and brought to England during the 18th century.
The exotic mahogany selected for this table is of the best quality that could possibly be sourced in this era. The beautifully figured grain and depth of character is heavily prized and quite difficult to attain. With even moderate exposure to daylight the full quality of the wood is made apparent. This game table was undoubtedly made for a wealthier patron who had the means to afford the finest furniture made during this period. We note the table to be in excellent condition with only several old repairs evident which do not detract from the table. There is no question that this game table will withstand another 250 years provided it is preserved and treated as the historic treasure that it is.
The antique game table measures 40" wide x 17" deep x 29 1/2" tall. With the top open the table expands to 33 1/4" deep
