We hold a massive inventory of antique and decorative arts of all time periods & styles but our true passion is top tier 18th & 19th century American furniture. This double blank door secretary desk is a true case study of period Connecticut high end cabinetry. This desk stands on a finely formed dovetailed bracket base. The lower case has four graduated drawers with period batwing brasses & original escutcheons. The drawer faces have not been redrilled and there is no evidence of the hardware ever being swapped or moved. The hardware is attached with hand cut brass posts & period brass nuts. The cherry lid opens to reveal 7 interior drawers in a split format. The case is completely dovetailed including horizontal transitions & more at the base and crown. The top portion of the secretary features peg joined paneled cherry doors that open to reveal four interior shelves. Our family is originally from Boston with a true love for Boston & North Shore furniture. We've since relocated to western MA and have had the pleasure of studying the best Connecticut antiques in an intimate hands on manner. We believe this was made in Colchester or Hartford River Valley region CA 1780/1790. This desk is crafted from the most select cuts of New England cherry with a beautiful grain pattern. The desk has massive single plank cherry sides with an attractive figuring. This desk is an absolute gem rich with 18th c tool marks, scribe marks, advanced joinery, original brass hardware & wonderful patina. The desk is finished in a warm cherry color with minimal repairs & touch ups. We noted a few expertly done small restorations to a few drawer edges that were so well done we missed them on our first inspection. This is an investment grade antique 200+ years old and small restorations are expected. If any item has significant flaws or defects we will not offer them to our clients we'll send them off to an alternative sales platform. Our family has offered the finest American Golden Age furniture for the last 40 years and simply will not offer anything to our clients we wouldn't be proud to have in our personal collection. In the last 5 years we've only encountered a handful of CT period desks on this tier. Although we see more advanced desks from major cities such as Boston, New York City, & Philadelphia they are more prevalent being more prolific areas in the 18th century. True Connecticut specimens in cherry are far scarcer and highly sought after. We regularly deal with great Chapin, Lord group, and other important cabinet makers & are proud to offer yet another rare commanding secretary desk. This is a larger scale desk measuring 46 3/4" wide x 22 3/4" deep x 84" tall. See less
