It was published by Abraham Ortelius, the renowned Flemish cartographer, and is based on a map originally drawn by Jacques Surhon. This engraving appeared in one of the late 16th-century Latin editions of Ortelius's groundbreaking atlas *Theatrum Orbis Terrarum*, widely considered the first modern atlas. The map centers on the historic region of Hainaut and includes towns such as Mons, Valenciennes, Cambrai, and Maubeuge. The geography is highly detailed, featuring a dense network of rivers, fortified cities, forests, and regional borders. The region of Flanders (Flandria), Cambrésis, and parts of the diocese of Liège are also clearly marked. The map includes elaborate hand coloring that enhances both topographical detail and the aesthetic value. Ornate embellishments characteristic of Ortelius’s style frame the map: a large strapwork cartouche at upper right holds the title, and coats of arms and dedication flourishes appear on the left. The sea is filled with elegant lettering, and the typography is finely engraved throughout. The map is oriented with north at the top. Jacques Surhon (Surhonio Montano), the original draughtsman, was a distinguished mapmaker active in the mid-16th century. Ortelius credited him directly, a testament to the quality and importance of the original manuscript. The map was first engraved and printed in Antwerp around 1570–1595, and this particular edition likely comes from the later decades of Ortelius’s publishing career. Condition: This map is in fair overall condition for its age. The hand coloring remains vivid and carefully applied. The paper shows age toning, particularly along the edges. Item has been framed before, edges brittle. A minor split or reinforcement may be visible in the lower or outer margin, typical of maps of this period. Framing Tips: This map is visually impressive and benefits from a simple yet elegant frame to let the vibrant colors and Baroque ornamentation shine. Consider a gold-leaf or walnut frame with UV-protective glass. The piece is ideal for collectors of early European cartography or for those seeking a decorative antique map with strong regional and historical significance. See less
