This is a high quality cocktail muddler, used as a type of pestle used to crush fruits, herbs or spices in the bottom of a glass to release their flavour into a drink. Cocktail drinks that would utilize a muddler would be a mojito, a mint julep or an old fashioned.
Asprey was founded in 1781 by William Asprey and has always specialized in “articles of exclusive design and high quality”. They received their first Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria in 1862. At the time that this muddler was made, they held Royal Warrants from Queen Elizabeth II and The Prince of Wales (Prince Charles) as goldsmiths, silversmiths and jewellers, and from the Queen Mother as jewellers. The Queen Mother died in 2002, so this pre-dates her death. This is a wonderful object - great for the person who has everything. Certainly, this would have been quite expensive….
