The print, titled witte cochinchina’s, originates from geïllustreerd hoenderboek, an illustrated poultry book published in 1888 by elsevier. This work, a thorough guide on poultry breeding, housing, and care, was authored by julius volschau, a respected expert in poultry breeding societies across europe, and adapted for the dutch audience by dr. A. C. Oudemans jzn., the director of the royal zoological botanical society in the hague. Cochinchina chickens, also known as cochin, trace their origins to southern vietnam and were introduced to europe in the mid 19th century. Their introduction caused a sensation among poultry breeders and enthusiasts due to their imposing size, full feathered legs, and regal presence. The white cochinchina, a rare and sought after variety, is particularly prized for its soft, snow white feathers and well proportioned body. These birds were often kept as ornamental fowls in the estates of european aristocracy, symbolizing wealth and refinement. This lithograph was produced using chromolithography, a 19th century printing technique that enabled the creation of richly colored and highly detailed images. The original artwork was drawn by christian förster, a well known illustrator of animals. Chromolithographs were created by applying multiple layers of color, each requiring a separate stone plate. This painstaking process allowed for a realistic depiction of texture and shading, evident in the finely detailed feathers and expressive posture of the chickens in this print. Condition summary the print remains in very good condition, with its colors still vibrant and its details crisp. Some mild toning of the paper may be visible, consistent with its age. The edges of the sheet show minimal signs of wear, typical for a well preserved print from the late 19th century. Overall, this is a fine example of a historical poultry illustration, ideal for collectors of antique prints or enthusiasts of rare chicken breeds. Framing tips to best preserve and display this lithograph, consider the following framing options - use acid free matting to prevent deterioration and preserve the paper’s integrity. A soft white or light cream mat can enhance the delicate tones of the print - opt for uv protective glass to safeguard the colors from light exposure and fading - a wooden frame in a natural oak or deep mahogany finish complements the historical nature of the artwork - float mounting can be used if the edges of the original print are to be highlighted, giving it a more authentic presentation this lithograph is a fine example of 19th century artistry and a reflection of the fascination with ornamental poultry breeding of the era. Whether placed in a farmhouse kitchen, study, or antique print collection, it brings a timeless charm to any interior. See less
