The portrait is based on an original painting by Charles Bird King, a prolific American artist best known for documenting Native American dignitaries who visited Washington, D.C., during treaty negotiations. Meta-Koosega, also spelled Mētā-Kōosega, was a prominent figure of the Ojibwe (or Chippewa) people—one of the largest Native American tribes in North America. The Ojibwe are part of the Anishinaabe cultural group and traditionally occupied lands from the northern Great Lakes to the Plains and Subarctic regions of the United States and Canada. Known for their sophisticated oral traditions, birchbark canoes, and intricate beadwork, the Ojibwe played a vital role in early Indigenous diplomacy. In this portrait, Meta-Koosega is depicted in a fur robe, wearing a silver peace medal around his neck—an item commonly gifted to Native leaders by the U.S. government during the 18th and 19th centuries as a symbol of alliance and negotiation. His direct, introspective gaze, slightly tilted posture, and weathered expression evoke both strength and solemnity, capturing the enduring spirit of a man whose people were facing mounting challenges from colonial expansion. These lithographs, produced by J.T. Bowen of Philadelphia, preserve the likenesses of Native leaders whose images might otherwise have been lost to history—especially following the fire that destroyed many of King's original paintings at the Smithsonian. Today, these portraits stand as important cultural and historical records, admired by collectors, historians, and institutions alike. Condition report: Very good condition for its age.
