This antique 18th or 19th century, hand-painted wooden artwork of Our Lady of the Sign, also referred to as the … Read more This antique 18th or 19th century, hand-painted wooden artwork of Our Lady of the Sign, also referred to as the Panagia Oromeni, is a distinct icon of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary). The Yaroslavl Oranta The handcrafted, thick 3/4-inch wooden panel depicts a full-length Virgin Mary facing the viewer with her hands raised in the Orans (prayerful) position. The Christ Child is represented at the moment of his conception and is presented within a round aureole (halo) upon her chest. Two medallions with the Archangels clothed in the bishop’s omophorions are located in the left and righthand corners. The painting is also known as the Madonna of the Sign. The artwork is hand-painted using chocolate brown, rusty red, gold, and black. The frame is carved into the panel with the appearance of an inlay for the painting.
