It comes from the esteemed publication *Der Rittersaal: Eine Geschichte des Ritterthums*, published in Stuttgart by Carl Hoffmann. Under the artistic guidance of Friedrich Martin von Reibisch and the historical lens of Dr. Franz Kottenkamp, the work sought to authentically represent the grandeur, customs, and vivid spectacles of medieval European knighthood. Here, two knights and their horses occupy a scene of collapse and disarray. On the left, a defeated knight has been unhorsed, sprawling on the ground amidst shattered lance pieces and scattered armor plates. His steed, adorned in intricately patterned caparison with elegant floral motifs, stands nearby, its posture suggesting the tension and disruption of recent combat. Opposite, another knight—also dismounted—leans against his horse, their once-coordinated heraldic display now contrasting sharply with the broken fragments of armor below. The varied textures of polished steel, richly embroidered horse trappings, and vividly plumed crests evoke the meticulous craftsmanship of the lithographer and the fine hand-colouring process. The lithograph remains in good condition for its age. There are minor folds and light age-toning that lend authenticity without detracting from the clarity or vibrancy of the image. Such subtle signs confirm its 19th-century origin and add to its historical charm. An exceptional find for collectors of medieval art, historical costume, and martial imagery, this print brings the high drama and human vulnerability of the joust into compelling focus. It will make a compelling centerpiece in any distinguished collection. See less
