the tragic heroine of victor hugo's oriental novels, albaydé is a 15-year-old young woman who will meet a tragic fate in a patriarchal and slave-owning society, depicted here as a slave imprisoned in a harem. Cabanel's original 1848 work favored a meticulous rendering, where albaydé's absent expression and sickly whiteness evoke lost love and corrupted youth.
