Originally published in 'de zoogdieren: afgebeeld en in hunne levenswijze geschetst', this illustration showcases the regal stature and thick mane characteristic of this now-extinct wild subspecies. The artist's attention to anatomical accuracy and intricate shading captures the lion's muscular form and commanding presence. The barbary lion (panthera leo leo), also known as the atlas lion, once roamed north africa, particularly in the atlas mountains of morocco, algeria, and tunisia. It was one of the largest lion subspecies, distinguished by its long, dense mane that extended over its shoulders and chest. Unlike its sub-saharan relatives, the barbary lion adapted to colder mountainous environments. Sadly, due to hunting and habitat loss, the last wild barbary lions disappeared by the mid-20th century, though a few individuals survive in captivity. Created by c.c. G. Zool. And printed by la haye & j. L. G. V., this lithograph is a valuable piece for collectors of antique zoological prints, wildlife enthusiasts, and those interested in historical representations of africa’s great predators. Keywords: 19th century, lithograph, natural history, zoology, barbary lion, atlas lion, panthera leo, african wildlife, scientific illustration, antique print, animal engraving, wildlife art, taxonomy, netherlands, la haye, j.l.g.v. --- condition summary: the print is in good condition, with some mild age-related toning and scattered foxing along the margins. The lithographic details remain sharp, preserving the intricate mane and muscular stance of the lion. Minor irregularities along the edges due to past binding are present, but there are no major tears or folds. The artwork is well-preserved and highly collectible. --- framing tips: to enhance the dramatic presence of this lithograph, use an acid-free mat in a neutral shade such as off-white or cream. A dark wooden or black frame will provide a refined contrast, highlighting the lion’s noble posture. Uv-protective glass is recommended to prevent fading over time. If displayed with other wildlife lithographs, matching frames will create a cohesive and elegant collection. See less
