This is a popular motif in the culture and art of the Far East, particularly China. The figurines are made of ceramic with a turquoise glaze. One of the figurines has a glued head – a repair that is barely visible.

According to Chinese beliefs, the Foo dog was a symbol of power and dignity, provided protection against evil spirits and forces, and was considered a defender of the law. Depictions of the Chinese lion were most often placed in front of state buildings, tombs, and temple gates. The Chinese lion motif first appeared in Chinese culture two hundred years before our era.

The Chinese lion is most often depicted as a pair of sculptures – a lion and a lioness. The lioness holds a cub under her paw, while the lion holds a sphere depicting the Flower of Life, an ancient symbol containing information about the creation and structure of the universe and humanity. See less
