These trays are known in France as "tole peinte". … Read more Offered for your consideration is a lovely antique French toleware tray. These trays are known in France as "tole peinte". This tray dates to 1860 - during the time of Napoleon the Third. It is hand painted with a colorful floral spray on a black ground. It has two openings on each end to be used as handles and the sides are reticulated.

Toleware trays were popular in 18th and 19th century France and evolved from practical household items into highly sought after decorative objects often featuring elaborate hand painted designs. French toleware is particularly known for its use of bright colors and sophisticated designs, often mimicking lacquered items from the East.

This decorative tray is in very good antique condition. It shows wear commensurate with age and use. The beautiful hand painted floral spray is intact. There are some rubs and small areas of paint loss to the black ground There is some crazing to the finish. A few little areas of rust are seen to the front also. The gilt edge painted trim has worn away in areas. The back of the tray has an old rusty finish and chips to the bottom side edges. The tray has no dings or dents in the metal that I can see. Overall this is a wonderful early french piece of toleware and it displays beautifully.
