The context is obviously that of … Read more Beautiful oil on canvas depicting a bucolic peasant scene set in the Roman countryside. The context is obviously that of the painters belonging to the school called the "bamboccianti," which developed in Rome in the 17th century, with Pieter van Laer, also known as Il Bamboccio for his childish appearance, as their reference and master. This school was joined by Flemish, Dutch, and Italian painters who were active in Rome. Among the artists of this pictorial movement, we find painters such as Jan Miel, Andries Both, Karel Dujardin, Thomas Wijck, Johannes Lingelbach, Jan Asselyn, Pieter van Lint, Michiel Sweerts, and Keil Eberhard, and, among the Italians, Viviano Codazzi (1611-1672), Michelangelo Cerquozzi (1602-1660), and Filippo Giannetto (1630-1702). Typical of the school was the portrayal of popular scenes of common life in papal Rome, with particular attention to that unique world that lives on the margins of society, such as pimps, thieves, gamblers and cheats, prostitutes and beggars, juxtaposing them with a classical reinterpretation of Roman ruins. The patronage came from the nobility and the upper bourgeoisie who desired to elevate their social status. It is possible, in fact, to attribute the execution of the canvas that we propose more precisely to the painter Johannes Lingelbach (Frankfurt am Main, 10 October 1622 – Amsterdam, November 1674) or to his close circle. Commonly known as Jan, he was a Dutch painter and engraver of German origin from the Golden Age, active in Italy, France, and the Netherlands. A painter who loved to paint popular scenes set in imaginary landscapes, taken from the Roman countryside, based on sketches drawn from life. The painting depicts in the foreground a group of peasants drinking merrily among numerous resting animals and the products of their autumn harvests, while other figures scattered here and there in the vast courtyard of the suburb continue with their work as sharecroppers; in fact, on the right, one is pulling a cart with oxen or others in the distance are gathered perhaps at a banquet. The architectural representation of the small village perched on a rock is beautiful; while on the left, it opens to the teeming landscape of the Lazio countryside. The painting has been recently cleaned and is in good condition. The canvas measures 110 cm x 71 cm. The beautiful frame it possesses is finely carved and is a 20th-century remake.
